Cyprus1974.org documents the 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus, the ongoing military occupation of the island’s north, and the ethnic cleansing of its Greek Cypriot communities — through primary historical documents and an interactive map.
What this site documents
In the summer of 1974 Turkey invaded Cyprus and seized roughly the northern third of the island. More than 170,000 Greek Cypriots were driven from their homes, and hundreds of towns and villages with centuries of continuous Greek presence were emptied of their inhabitants. This site brings together the record of what was lost and the documentary evidence of how it happened.
The interactive map
The interactive map plots the Greek Cypriot towns and communities of the occupied north, with population figures, churches and schools, and the people recorded as killed or still missing from each place. It is a way to see, community by community, the human geography that the occupation erased.
Historical & legal documents
The site also hosts the full text of key primary sources on the Cyprus question, including:
- the European Commission of Human Rights report on Cyprus v. Turkey (10 July 1976);
- the Radcliffe Constitutional Proposals (1956) and other constitutional plans;
- United Nations, EOKA-era, and independence-period documents tracing the events from the 1950s to the invasion.

Purpose
The aim is preservation and public record: to keep accessible, in one place, both the memory of the communities that were cleansed and the primary evidence of the invasion and occupation.
