Kythrea is a large predominantly Greek mixed in the occupied part of the Lefkosia District. Within the geographical area of Kythrea lies Chrysida which initially was an independent settlement but later became one of the six regions of Kythrea.

Geographical Location: It lies 13 km Northeast of Nicosia, on the southern foot of the Pentadaktylos mountain range, in the geographical region of Mesaoria at an elevation of 160m.

Population: The population of these communities consisted in 1960 of 2.951 Greeks and 4 Turks. Their Greek population in 1973 was 2.947.

Christian Places of Worship: Within these communities, are the churches of Agia Marina, Panagia Chardakiotissa (Cemetary), Agios Andronikos (Cemetary), Agia Anna Syriania, Agios Georgios, Timios Stavros (Cemetary), Apostolos Loukas (Chrysida), Timios Stavros (Chrysida) and the chapels of Panagia Theotokos, Panagia Plataniotissa (Syrgania) (Ereipia) (Holy Monastery), Agios Georgios tous Mantides, Archangelos, Agios Georgios o Potamitis, Apostolos Loukas, Agios Antonios (Maronite), Agios Dimitrianos (ruins).

Schools: The 3 Greek Primary Schools had 318 students during the 1973-74 school year. Additionally, a Greek Secondary School also operated here.

Effects of the 1974 Turkish Invasion: During the Turkish Invasion of 1974, the communities was taken over by the Turkish army and as a result the whole of their Greek population was ethnically cleansed. Since then, the Turkish occupation forces and the illegal occupation authority prevent their return.
