Karavas is a large Greek community in the occupied Keryneia District.
Geographical Location: It lies 12 km West of Keryneia, on the coastal plane of Keryneia, at a distance of 2 klm from the coast at an elevation of 70m.
Population: The population of this community in 1960 numbered 2416 (all Greeks). Its Greek population in 1973 was 2.251.
Christian Places of Worship: Within this community, are the churches of Evangelistria, Agia Eirini, Agios Georgios, Acheiropoiitos (Holy Monastery) (Lampousa) and the chapels of Apostolos Pavlos, Agios Antonios, Agios Pavlos, Apostolos Andreas, Agios Skoutalaris, Agia Marina, Agios Panteleimon, Vasiliki, Panagia Galaterousa, Agios Georgios (ruins), Archangelos, Apostolos Petros, Agios Andronikos, Agios Evlalios (Lampousa), Agios Fanourios (Lampousa).
Schools: The 2 Greek Primary Schools had 301 students during the 1973-74 school year.
Effects of the 1974 Turkish Invasion: During the Turkish Invasion of 1974, this community was taken over by the Turkish army and as a result the whole of its Greek population was ethnically cleansed. Since then, the Turkish occupation forces and the illegal occupation authority prevent their return.
